Rise In Anti-Aging Procedures Of The Hands

Tuesday, August 20th, 2013

So it appears that the newest trend in plastic surgery is hand rejuvenation.  We’ve heard about chin implants, the Facebook facelift, the Pippa butt lift, and now it’s treating the Madonna Mitts.  From the Daily Mail:

Cosmetic surgery clinics have  reported an 18  per cent increase in enquiries in the past month of  people having anti-ageing  procedures on their hands.

The new cosmetic surgery trend, which sees  women having dermal fillers and laser resurfacing to reduce the signs of ageing,  has been dubbed the banishing of ‘Madonna Mitts’ after popstar Madonna, 55,  who has ‘anti-aged’ almost every part of  her body but often resorts to fingerless gloves to cover her hands.

As the years pass, skin on the hands thins,  causing veins to become more prominent and liver spots to appear.

While make-up can disguise tell-tale signs of  ageing on the face, it’s more difficult with hands – which is why it’s often  said that hands are the best indicator of age.

Speaking about the latest cosmetic trend, a  spokesman for the Transform clinic, which has seen an 18 per cent increase in  the number of anti-ageing hand procedures perforemed, said: ‘Our hands are  exposed to the sun more frequently than other parts of the body and a failure to  apply sun cream to hands as regularly as we do the face makes them susceptible  to sunspots and accelerated aging.

There are many ways to rejuvenate the hands.  The first approach to take are creams.  Hydroquinone can be used along with an exfoliating cream to lighten age spots.  IPL treatments can also be used in conjunction with creams to further enhance the results.  Some doctors are injecting fillers into the hands, such as Sculptra and Juvederm.  Other doctors are injecting fat into the hands to soft them up and reduce the appearance of veins.

The hands are definitely a body part that shows its age, and I agree that treatments for them are definitely becoming more and more popular.

Paula Abdul Looks “Straight Up” Fantastic!

Monday, August 12th, 2013

Have you seen any photos of Paula Abdul lately?  She looks great.  Has she had a little work done to get there?  I think so.  I would speculate that she’s had some injections of Botox, filler, and some skin tightening treatments.  Check out my comments and Paula’s photos at Radar Online HERE.

How Many Years Does Plastic Surgery Take Off Your Appearance?

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013

There is an interesting study soon to be published that looks at just how many years plastic surgery can take off your face.  And, can plastic surgery make you look more attractive?

From Today.com:

Zimm and four colleagues tracked 204 facial plastic surgery patients, all of whom had opted for primary facial surgical procedures such as facelifts, neck lifts, upper or lower blepharoplasty (eye lifts) and brow lifts at the same Toronto, Canada, plastic surgery clinic.

Out of the 204, 12 men and 37 women met the criteria for the study. These 49 subjects, who ranged in age from 42 to 73, had a series of photos taken before and after their surgery. Makeup and jewelry, which the study refers to as “confounding variables,” were not allowed in either the before or after shots.

Photos were all taken by lead author Dr. Peter Adamson, who also performed the plastic surgery, using the same standardized background, the same camera and the same type of photography techniques.

A group of 50 “raters,” primarily made up of hospital workers and lay people recruited from the community, were then asked to estimate and record the age of the patients in the before and after photographs. They were also asked to rate the patient’s attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the top ranking (as always).

On average, raters estimated the patients’ age to be about 2.1 years younger than their chronological age before surgery and 5.2 years younger than their real age after surgery. There also was a small, “insignificant” increase in attractiveness scores in the after photos.

So do you really only lose 3 years off your looks with plastic surgery?

I don’t think so.

If my patients lost only 3 years after having actual surgery, I’d be out of business.  “How much younger will I look after my facelift?” is a common question plastic surgeons like me get asked nearly every day.  My answer depends on the patient, but typically ranges from 7-15 years.  Losing three years off your appearance is more in line with spa-grade treatments, not plastic surgery in my opinion.  There was another study a couple years ago that revealed facelifts take off 7 years on average, which is more along the lines of what I’d expect.  You can read about that study HERE.

Plastic Surgeon Sues Staten Island Mob Wives Renee Graziano For Defamation

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

Interesting story from silive.com:

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — “Mob Wives” reality-TV star Renee Graziano allegedly told the world a “full-body lift” performed by a plastic surgeon nearly dropped her six feet in a grave.

The Oakwood resident wanted to nip and tuck some fat and sagging skin, but instead claimed to have “flat-lined” and “almost died” after her plastic surgeon put her under the knife.

She called the procedure, broadcast on the show, a “plastic surgery nightmare.”

Ms. Graziano, 43, the daughter of reputed Bonanno crime family consigliere Anthony (TG) Graziano of Huguenot, allegedly told media outlets she lost six pints of blood and underwent emergency treatment at Staten Island University Hospital.

The doctor, who denies any medical error, struck back with a $77 million defamation lawsuit against Ms. Graziano, VH1 and the show’s producers. The action was filed in Brooklyn state Supreme Court.

Wow.  As a plastic surgeon who has performed surgery for television programs, I always fear that the patient will develop a complication.  It’s inevitable that some patients have postoperative issues, and the vast majority of the time these issues can be cleared up without jeopardizing the patient/doctor relationship.  The stakes are exponentially increased, however, when television cameras are involved.  Performing a successful surgery on TV can get a lot of traffic into your practice, but a major complication or an unhappy celebrity can be potentially devastating.  Probably the most extreme example of this is Dr. Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon who operated on Kanye West’s mom before she died.

Asia’s Ideal Beauty – Looking Caucasian?

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

My latest article on CNN.com has generated a lot of discussion.  I’d like to hear what you think!

“Dr. Youn, my daughter is so ugly.”

A Korean mother in her fifties sits before me in the exam room, her teenage daughter next to her.  “You need to fix her ugly nose, open up her eyes and give her a double fold of her eyelids.”

“Okay,” I look at her daughter.  “Jane, what do you think?  Is this something you want?”

Jane stares at the floor, unmoving.  Then she speaks, eyes still looking downwards.

“I guess.  Whatever my mom says.”

Plastic surgery is hot in Asia.  According to the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), one in five Korean women between the ages of 19-49 have undergone cosmetic surgery.  This is compared to one in twenty in the United States.  Although the United States and Brazil are the top two countries in sheer number of plastic surgeries performed, China and
Japan are currently ranked number three and four.  Tiny South Korea is ranked number seven.

Asian culture has embraced cosmetic surgery.  Unlike in the United States, it’s no longer considered taboo to admit to having been nipped and tucked, even among celebrities.   Miss South Korea 2012 confessed to having gone under the knife, revealing, “I never said I was born beautiful.”

Interestingly, I find that the older generation often pushes younger people to have work done.  Like Jane’s mom, I’ve met several Korean parents in their fifties and older who have no qualms about encouraging their children to undergo plastic surgery.  They even poke and prod at their kids’ faces to suggest how a surgeon should improve their looks.

Amanda Bynes Continues Having Plastic Surgery

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Amanda Bynes is at it again.  The young actress tweeted that she just underwent a rhinoplasty two days ago (Saturday), after having her breast implants removed a couple weeks ago.  Some of her comments from Twitter:

I made it out of the surgery alive! Haha! I’ll post the video soon! I need one more procedure to thin out the bridge<blessed!

My doctors are heroes who also correct kids who have cleft lip – something as traumatic as webbing in between your eyes!I wanted to share my story with you to prove that I’m not crazy, I was just embarrassed. Surgery is a complete miracle for me – nothing…can hold you back from living out your dreams. There’s a surgery for everything that’s wrong with you!

This whole situation is concerning, because according to the media reports I’ve read, Amanda Bynes appears to be a very troubled soul.  I question whether she is in a reasonable psychological state to be a good candidate for plastic surgery.  And there is not “a surgery for everything that’s wrong with you,” especially is that thing wrong is in your head.  I hope that she gets professional help, and not of the plastic surgery kind.

Plastic Surgery Can Give You A Lift – Some Interesting Statistics From ASAPS

Saturday, June 15th, 2013

These are some interesting statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  I do a lot of lifting procedures and find that these have some of the highest satisfaction rates in plastic surgery.  One thing that surprised me, 80% of people who lose weight gain it back!  That’s a disappointing number.  I wonder how these numbers may be applied to the various diets?  Some probably have higher rates of recurrent weight gain than others.

Has George Clooney Started The New Trend Of “Ball Ironing?”

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

He’s such a joker!  In an interview with Italy’s Max Magazine, George Clooney claimed to undergo a new plastic surgery treatment: he had his testicles ironed.

‘I never fixed my eyes, but I spent more  money to stretch the skin of my testicles. I did not like the wrinkles. It’s a new  technique, many people in Hollywood have done it. It’s called ‘ball  ironing.’”

Now a Beverly Hills nurse beautician actually offers a similar treatment, called the “Male Laser Lift” or “Tighten The Tackle.”  The $900 procedure consists of evening out skin tone, removing discoloration from ingrown hairs, removing skin tags  and providing an overall tightening to the external skin.

Is this is come on?  The article in the Daily Mail is pretty detailed, and even includes Top Ten Male Beauty Secrets that are pretty much on the mark.  You can read the article HERE.

Double Jaw Surgery In South Korea – A Horrifying New Trend

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

This is a fascinating video from Newsy about a new trend in Korean plastic surgery: the double jaw surgery. This is an operation where the jaw is broken in two places, reshaped, and wired shut for six weeks. Apparently, many South Koreans are having this done in order to thin their jawlines to look more ‘attractive.’ It’s an excruciatingly painful, invasive operation. I should know. I’ve had it done.

I wrote about this in my book “In Stitches,” but during high school my jaw grew to epic proportions. I had trouble closing my mouth and eating. I thought I looked deformed. So I underwent surgery to break my jaw and set it back. And voila! It worked.

But it hurt like hell.

To anyone who is considering double jaw surgery and really, truly does not need it: Don’t Do It! Watch the video about to hear stories from people who’ve regretted it. If you do have a real orthognathic problem, though, make sure you see a reputable oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Don’t trust this surgery to just anyone.

Kelly Rowland At The Billboard Music Awards – Looking Great With Breast Implants

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Did you watch the Billboard Music Awards the other night?  I enjoyed the show, and even noticed some plastic surgery on the screen.  Some are, I believe, pretty obvious, like Wayne Newton’s face.  Others, like Kelly Rowland, just look fantastic.  This photo was taken Sunday night at the show.  Some of you may have known that she underwent a very tasteful breast augmentation a few years ago (check out this post from 2008 for before-and-after photos).  Today it looks like her breast implants have always been a part of her.  I believe she’s an example of great celeb plastic surgery.

Getting Back At Your Ex– By Having Surgery

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

This is from an article I wrote for CNN.com that just posted today. Hope you enjoy it:

“Dr. Youn, I want the works.”
Carol, an attractive Caucasian woman in her mid-forties, sat across from me in the consultation room. Her eyes stared into mine, unwavering.
“What do you mean by ‘the works?’”
“I want to enlarge my breasts, flatten my tummy, lift my neck, and skinny my thighs. Oh, and I want my eyes to tilt like Megan Fox’s, and I want you to plump my lips like Angelina Jolie’s.” She puckered and smacked her lips.
“Carol, that’s a lot of plastic surgery. Are you sure you need all this? Why do you want to have so much done?”
She paused. Her face flushed a bright shade of crimson red.
“Because,” she seethed, “My husband left me for a younger woman.
“And I want revenge.”

Revenge plastic surgery is becoming more and more common. A survey by the Transform Plastic Surgery Group in the United Kingdom found that over a quarter (26%) of their patients were recently divorced women. Eleven percent of their patients were newly single men.

Even Hollywood is getting involved in revenge surgery. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Brandi Glanville recently revealed in her book, Drinking and Tweeting and Other Brandi Blunders, that she spent $12,000 to undergo rejuvenation of her private parts after breaking up with her then-husband Eddie Cibrian. She even paid for it with his credit card.

Amanda Bynes – Nose Job – Troubled Soul

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Actress Amanda Bynes has recently announced on Twitter that she’s undergone a rhinoplasty.  From her Twitter account:

Intouch used a photo from years ago on their cover and I hate it! The reason I’ve asked all magazines and blogs to stop using old photos of me is I don’t look like that anymore! I had a nose job to remove skin that was like a webbing in between my eyes. I wasn’t going to tell anyone, but I look so much prettier in my new photos that I don’t want old photos used anymore! I’m so sick of magazines and blogs using old photos! When will they stop? I will never look like that again! Having surgery was the most amazing thing for my confidence!

I’d consider that to be a nice endorsement for good plastic surgery, had she not come across lately as a troubled soul.  According to the Daily Mail, she’s also recently admitted to an eating disorder and has shaved half her head!  Hopefully she gets some help before something really bad happens.

Janice Dickinson Declares Bankrupcy And Claims, “I Live For Plastic Surgery”

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

The ”original supermodel” Janice Dickinson has recently given an interview to In Touch Weekly about declaring bankruptcy, being $1 million in debt, and her enthusiasm for plastic surgery.  From the In Touch Weekly website:

The former and now bankrupt America’s Next Top Model judge sits down with In Touch and dishes about going broke, planning her comeback — and the only surgical procedure she won’t consider — “butt implants!”

Despite recently declaring bankruptcy — a chunk of that stemming from “press whore doctors that offered to give me Botox and fix my teeth for free and then slapped me with bills” — Janice says she can’t recall exactly how much she’s spent on surgeries to date. “I don’t remember — all my ex-husbands paid for them!” she confesses to In Touch.

And although Janice admits to her first and only breast augmentation when she was 32 or “in the Jurassic era,” as she refers to her youth, she says her surgery list is short compared to other woman in Hollywood. “I had a tummy tuck and face-lift and currently do Botox and Restylane,” she reveals to In Touch, on newsstands now.

The rest of her face is hands-off! “I don’t get anything in my cheeks. I have perfect bone structure,” the buxom brunette tells the mag, adding, “My lips are mine!”

So she claims that her doctors performed the procedures for free, then billed her afterwards?  If true, that’s a strange practice.  The only time I bill patients afterwards is if insurance is involved, and they owe for copays or deductibles.

You’ve gotta admit that Janice is pretty hilarious and outrageous.  Hopefully she gets back on her feet again soon.

Tom Cruise- Looking Younger Than Ever

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

To honor Tom Cruise’s new hit movie, here’s a link to an analysis of how I think Tom looks so young, now into his 5th decade.  From MSNBC.com:

“I don’t think he’s found the Fountain of Youth, but I think he’s done the next best thing — found a good plastic surgeon,” says Youn,  a regular contributor to msnbc.com and TODAY.com. “He looks like someone who has had a plethora of the best cosmetic treatments available.”

Youn, who hasn’t treated Cruise, believes he’s had multiple procedures done. “To look as good as he does, it’s not possible to have had just one thing done.”

For more of my analysis, check out the link HERE.

Monica Lewinsky – $100,000 in plastic surgery?

Saturday, April 6th, 2013

I was recently interviewed by the National Enquirer about Monica Lewinsky. Apparently she is in the running for the upcoming Fox show Celebrity Swan. Here are my quotes:

And celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Tony Youn, who has not treated Monica, tallied up what he thought her wish list would be. It includes $25,000 worth of liposuction, another $20,000 to tighten up her skin after the lipo, $2,000 for lip enhancement, $1,000 for earlobe shortening, $2,000 in filler injections, a $15,000 tummy tuck and $10,000 for a nose job.

“ROUND IT OUT WITH CELLULITE treatments for $3,000, an arm-lift for $10,000 and facial chemical peels and laser treatments for $2,000,” Dr. Youn told The ENQUIRER.

Check out their story with photos and a couple other plastic surgeons’ opinions HERE.

Post-Divorce Discounts For Plastic Surgery??

Monday, April 1st, 2013

The Doctor Oz Show recently aired a segment about plastic surgeons giving discounts for patients who have undergone a recent divorce.  According to a survey conducted by the program, 19% of plastic surgeons offer discounts to women going under the knife!  This trend is somewhat troubling to me, as a board-certified plastic surgeon.  I often see patients who come to see me for surgery after undergoing a divorce, but would never try to discount surgery in order to subtly coerce them into undergoing the procedure.  Sometimes these women (and occasionally men) are in vulnerable psychological states, and I strongly believe it’s wrong for a plastic surgeon to take advantage of that.

The show had an interesting discussion between two plastic surgeons and a psychologist that got a little heated at times.  I agreed with many of the points the psychologist made, but completely reject her statement that most plastic surgeons don’t turn down patients for surgery when they aren’t psychologically good candidates.  I turn down about one out of every 4-5 patients who come to see me, mostly because of unrealistic expectations or psychological issues.

You can catch snippets of the show on the Doctor Oz Show website links below:
