Miley Cyrus – Has She Plumped Up Her Lips?

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

Miley Cyrus has recently posted a picture on her Twitter account, prompting many to speculate that she’s undergone lip enhancement.  What do I think?

Before-and-after photos are consistent with lip injections using a filler like Juvederm or Restylane.  Her current appearance on this photo definitely resembles patients who’ve recently had their lips enhanced and are still a bit swollen.  I suspect that we’ll see it settle down with time, and look just fine.

Plastic Surgeon Injects His Own Face With 35 Vials Of Juvederm!

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Click HERE for video.  I removed the video since it automatically played.  So annoying!

Florida plastic surgeon Dr. Ryan Maercks filmed himself injecting his own face with 35 vials of Juvederm, as a way to show his patients how volumetric filling of the face is a very good method of facial rejuvenation. Yes, he injected it into his own face! Check out the video. It’s pretty shocking.

I agree with Dr. Maercks that one problem with filler injections is that many patients can only afford a syringe or two. Optimal results can take multiple syringes, which can be unaffordable. But, instead of injecting a dozen vials of Juvederm at $500 each, I prefer using fat grafting or Sculptra. Results with these treatments last a lot longer than Juvederm and are much less expensive.

So what do you think? What would you think about your plastic surgeon if he injected 35 vials of Juvederm into his face?

If you’re one of my patients, then make no mistake. I would never inject my face with 35 vials of Juvederm. I can barely pop a pimple on my face, much less stick needles into it.

Lady Gaga – Lip Plumping Plastic Surgery?

Friday, July 6th, 2012

The internet has been all abuzz about Lady Gaga’s lips.  She tweeted a photo recently, causing many to speculate that the pop singer has had injections to plump up her lips!  This, after declaring that she is against plastic surgery but a proponent of body modification procedures (see my previous post on this HERE).  So does this photo show that she’s had her lips injected?

It’s definitely possible.  Her lips look much plumper now than they did when she was younger.  Check out a video of a young, brunette Lady Gaga HERE.  If she’s had them enhanced, I suspect she’s used an injectable filler like Juvederm.

I’m a huge Lady Gaga fan.  She’s an immense talent with an incredible voice.  Even more than her music, I admire that she uses her platform to support anti-bullying programs and provide an inspiration for gay youth who are teased, picked on, and looked down upon.  I like that she uses her power for good.

Does Jennifer Lopez Have A Trout Pout?

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

It appears that J. Lo may have had her lips plumped in advance of the live American Idol shows.  Check out a photo from Radar Online.  I suspect that her lips have been injected with a filler like Restylane or Juvederm.  Let’s see how she looks once the live American Idol shows start up.  Probably pretty darn good.

Heather Locklear Turns 50 With Plastic Surgery

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Can you believe that Heather Locklear is turning 50?  Ten years ago she looked great, without any obvious signs of plastic surgery.  Now, photos like this one from Zap 2 It appear to show that she’s been seeing a plastic surgeon.  Her lips are plumped up, possibly from Restylane or Juvederm.  Her cheeks appear fuller today than they were ten years ago.  This could be due to surgical facial fat grafting.  Her face is also exceedingly smooth, likely from multiple chemical peels, laser treatments, and/or Botox.  Her tight jawline could be due to a mini-facelift.

Heather is a timeless beauty.  I think she would look even better if she laid off the injectable fillers a bit.

FDA Close to Approving Restylane for Use in the Lips – and My Celebrity Lip Slideshow on MSNBC.com!

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

An FDA advisory panel today voted to recommend approval for the use of cosmetic injectable Restylane as a lip enhancer.  The FDA still needs to make a final decision, however they typically follow the advisory panel’s recommendations, according to an article on MSNBC.com.  This is big news for Restylane manufacturer Medicis, which markets Restylane, its cousin Perlane, and the Botox competitor Dysport.  Although many plastic surgeons (myself included) have safely used Restylane to inject lips for years, it allows Medicis to potentially market their product as the only FDA approved cosmetic injectable for the lips.  I bet Allergan (manufacturer of Juvederm) isn’t too happy with that!

I actually prefer using Juvederm over Restylane in the lips, since it’s a softer substance that injects easier.  Restylane is a little grittier, and provides a better lift (in my opinion) in the deeper folds of the face than Juvederm.  In the end, both products appear to have a high satisfaction rate, especially if cost isn’t involved.

Speaking of lips, MSNBC.com was kind enough to ask me to compile a list of the best and worst celebrity lips in Hollywood.  They’ve created a slideshow with my comments HERE.  It’s some really fun stuff!  If you look closely, you may even find an excerpt from my plastic surgery tell-all book In Stitches!

Steven Tyler – American Plastic Surgery Idol?

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Have you watched American Idol lately?  Is it me, or does Steven Tyler look like he’s had work done?  I reviewed some before-and-after photos for the National Enquirer (printed in this week’s issue) and it appears to me that his face is plumped up and filled out.  I bet he’s done more than listen to music to prepare for being an American Idol judge.  It appears to me that he’s had substantial fillers injected under his eyes, in his cheeks, and in his frown lines.  If I had to choose, I’d bet on Juvederm.  It’s a soft, long-lasting filler that would be perfect for volumizing his face.  And if it’s not overdone, then Dude Should Not Look Like A Lady.

Jenny from the Block always looks good…

Lisa Rinna Admits to Too Much Juvederm

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Lisa Rinna has gone on record admitting that she’s had too much Juvederm injected into her cheeks. According to momlogic.com:

I had Juvederm put in my cheeks. That’s what I overdid — big time. I tried it because my girlfriends did it. I thought: I’ll do it! I saw a photo and I was like, “Oh Jesus. That’s no good. That’s NOT good.” What I learned is that I don’t really need it. You get older and insecure and you think you need it and you don’t. I learned less is more. Keep your skin good. But, I still like Botox. It’s great! It doesn’t change the shape of my face… I look like a freak! I always said I wouldn’t change my face, but I did it. I can’t not be honest about it. I’d look like a fool. It’s so obvious… I used to feel like it was nobody’s business. But when this happened, I realized I couldn’t hide it.

Cheeks? CHEEKS? What about her lips?
While I think her lips are majorly overdone, it is nice to hear a Hollywood star be candid and not deny the obvious. She does seem like a pretty down-to-earth person.

Pam Anderson – No to Botox but Yes to Juvederm?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Here is a photograph of Pam Anderson during a recent press tour in Australia to promote her new reality show on E!. As you can see, there is no sign of any Botox in her forehead, but her lips look pretty plump, possibly due to Juvederm injections. The cupid’s bow of her upper lip looks obliterated, which can happen when a good amount of injectable filler is placed there. This is one of the few photos that I’ve seen where Pam looks all of her 41 years. Maybe the jet lag hasn’t been kind. I always look (and feel) like hell after a long plane flight.

Juvederm lasts around 6-12 months, and I find it works very well in the lips when injected conservatively.

Lindsay Davenport Uses Juvederm and Botox

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

In an exclusive interview with Make Me Heal.com, new Juvederm spokesperson and professional tennis player Lindsay Davenport admits to having both Juvederm and Botox injections…and loving them:

No one should have to feel like their skin is aging faster than their body. Thanks to JUVÉDERM I just look my age. And my theory is, when I find something that works, I want to share it. That’s why I’m talking freely about my JUVÉDERM treatments….I love the results of Juvederm. I’ve also used Botox Cosmetic which has provided great results as well!

We perform Juvederm injections in my practice quite often. It injects very nicely, and some studies have shown longevity of the product for a year. Overall, my only complaint about Juvederm is that the syringe size is 0.8 cc, and not 1.0 cc like Restylane. There are so many other fillers on the market nowadays (including Perlane, Prevelle, Artifill, Radiesse, and several others) that it’s easy for a patient to be confused about what to use. An easy recommendation for patients is that you can’t go wrong starting out with Restylane or Juvederm, as these are the two ‘workhorses’ of filler products, in my opinion. Some of the other fillers are more ‘niche’ players (kind of like a doubles specialist in tennis).

Virginia Madsen Admits to Botox and Juvederm

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Oscar nominated actress Virginia Madsen has admitted to having both Botox and Juvederm injections, according to the latest People Magazine:

Pointing to the bridge between her eyes, the Sideways Oscar nominee, 45, told a New York press luncheon that “over the years” she’s put the wrinkle-erasing product to use in order to deal with her “11″ lines, and “more recently,” she said, she’s also used Juvéderm to correct the creases at the sides of her mouth. “

As I started to talk about it and as it ended up in print there was such an overwhelming response from friends and family, lots and lots of actors, people on the street,” said Madsen, who is the new spokesperson for Allergan, Inc. – the maker of Botox and Juvéderm. “They were surprised that I looked so ‘normal.’ ”

Madsen, whose mother, Elaine Madsen, was at her side, said: “That is how it should be. I don’t have that sort of frozen look that we have talked about.”

She really looks good. There are SO many actors and actresses who have Botox treatments but don’t admit to it (which is just fine) or speak out against it (which is hypocritical). It’s nice to see someone come out of the Botox closet without worry. I wonder how much the company is paying her?
