This is an interesting article from the new Smart Beauty Guide: Two recent studies have shown that Botox injections can possibly alleviate symptoms of depression. One study showed a 47% decrease in their subjects’ depressive symptoms. The other study showed that 27% of subjects treated with Botox had significant improvement in their depression.
So how might this work?
Are the subjects less depressed since they look better after the Botox? Probably not.
Could they feel better because the Botox prevents them from frowning? Maybe.
At this point, we really don’t know!

Has Renee Zellweger lost her trademark look? She always looks to me like she’s sucking on a lemon. Recent photos, however, appear to show a completely different look, with her eyes wide open and none of the ‘lemon-sucking’ appearance. I give my comments in an article from today’s Radar Online, where I speculate that Botox injections may play a part in her current look. You can read the article HERE.

Talk about desperate! From the New York Post:
A pompous Park Avenue surgeon is offering free cosmetic services in exchange for dates with women who meet his incredibly exacting standards — “very skinny” dress size 0-2, white, aged 27-35, graduate of an Ivy League school, “Type B” personality (not “Type A” like him), and a rating of 8 or 9 on a 1-to-10 attractiveness scale.
Dr. Emil Chynn, 47, who runs Park Avenue LASEK, blasted out his matchmaking criteria and compensation plan to random attendees of a New Jersey networking event — whose cards he scooped up for potential matches, not business.
For a first date, he’ll shell out a $100 reward. He’ll offer free eyelash-enhancer Latisse or pay $200 for the second date; he’ll offer free Botox or pay $300 for a third date; he’ll offer free Juvederm injections or $400 for a fourth date; and free Lasek surgery on one eye worth $2,000 or $500 cash for a fifth date.
Yes, this guy is serious. According to the article, he struck out with the $1000-per-date matchmakers in New York City and is now trying this new approach. I think this guy needs to lower his standards and realize that he is not good-looking, he is not cool, and this publicity is making him look like the William Hung of physician bachelors.
She bangs! She bangs!

In Touch Weekly magazine is reporting that a source claims that Kim Kardashian is getting Botox injections while pregnant! A plastic surgeon is quoted in the article, supporting the claim. Kardashian’s reps have denied the claim, calling it “absurd and not true.”
So what do I think? Currently, there isn’t enough scientific data to confirm or deny safety of Botox in pregnancy. Not surprising, since what mother-to-be in her right mind would enter a trial that exposed her developing fetus to one of the most powerful toxins in the world? So IF Kim is using Botox while pregnant, then she seriously needs to get her head examined, and her plastic surgeon needs to be reprimanded!
I bet the lack of wrinkles that we see on Kim’s face is probably just due to good makeup and youthful skin.

I am really excited about the newest treatment we have at my office in Troy, Michigan. We’re now offering Miradry, the only FDA-approved, non-surgical solution to excessive underarm sweating, or hyperhidrosis. I’m actually the ONLY board-certified plastic surgeon in the entire state of Michigan to offer Miradry.
So what’s the scoop with Miradry? The device uses electro-magnetic energy (microwaves) to permanently destroy the sweat glands in the armpits. Local anesthetic is needed, and the procedure is performed in the office in about an hour. You can return to normal activities very shortly afterwards.
The studies so far are showing an 80-90% reduction in sweating at 2 years, with every indication that the results are permanent. RealSelf.com has greater than a 90% “worth it” rating. I’m really excited to offer my patients this revolutionary, game-changing treatment. If you have problems with excessive sweating of your armpits, then this treatment is for you!
To learn more about Miradry, feel free to call my office at (248) 273-7700 to schedule your complimentary Miradry consultation with my staff. Trust me, it really works.

There is an interesting article in The Body Odd on NBCNews.com regarding the many uses of Botox. We all know about Botox for wrinkles, but did you know that Botox can be used to treat many other problems? Botox has been used successfully to treat plantar fasciitis, migraines, overactive bladder, bulky calves, and even for weight loss! And its indications are only growing.

Did you watch the Oscars last night? I thought it was a mediocre show overall. Loved seeing Anne Hathaway win an Oscar for her role in Les Miserables. Argo was a great movie as well. I didn’t expect Ang Lee to win best director over Steven Spielberg. But the biggest surprise of the night?
Can you believe that she’s seventy years old! She looks amazing, with soft, full cheeks, a chiseled neckline, and smooth skin without any obvious signs of plastic surgery. Because she looks so good, I suspect that she’s had some help from a plastic surgeon. Maybe a facelift, some fat injections to her cheeks, and Botox in her forehead. Kudos to whoever might be her plastic surgeon (not me) for doing a great job.
Her wrinkles are just a memory!

J.Lo just says no to Botox, and from what we can see above this turtleneck, it’s working.
The ageless former “American Idol” judge said she’s never had plastic surgery or anti-wrinkle Botox treatments — but won’t rule it out in the future.
“When I need to, maybe I will,” Lopez, 43, says in the latest People magazine. “I don’t know how I’m gonna feel. I reserve the right to not know right now. And I don’t judge anybody who does it.”
I’ve heard rumors from one source that she’s had liposuction years ago. I suspect that she’s also had a procedure to tighten her abdomen after having twins (such as a tummy tuck). I’ve never seen signs of obvious Botox or filler injections, though. So is it possible she’s telling the truth about being a plastic surgery virgin?
I suppose it’s possible, but it would be pretty difficult for a normal person to look as good as she does without at least some help from a plastic surgeon!

The FDA has sent a warning letter to 350 medical practices who may have purchased counterfeit Botox from a Canadian supplier. From NBC News.com:
The Food and Drug Administration said in a letter sent last month, a letter released publicly last week, that batches of the wrinkle treatment shipped by suppliers owned by pharmacy Canada Drugs have not been approved by the FDA and that the agency cannot assure their effectiveness or their safety.
The FDA said Canada Drugs was previously tied to shipping unapproved and counterfeit cancer drugs.
The agency warned doctors about buying drugs from sources other than licensed U.S. pharmacies. It is the fifth warning the agency has made this year about foreign suppliers providing unapproved drugs.
I often get faxes from various pharmacies offering Botox and other injectable products at prices cheaper than I get from the company directly. The offers are enticing, but I’ve never taken them up, mainly because I’ve been afraid that the product isn’t genuine. All plastic surgeons and dermatologists should be aware of this FDA warning, especially since these “Botox at 50% off!” faxes arrive quite frequently.

Strange and interesting article from the National Enquirer:
In one of his latest bids to turn back time, Simon had his saggy “turkey neck” tightened in a noninvasive procedure by a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon in October, said the source.
The neck-lift was likely done with the new Fractora Firm device, said Michigan-based plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, who has not treated Cowell. The device uses radio frequency energy to create tissue-firming collagen under the skin.
After the treatment, “Simon brought a technician with a portable hyperbaric chamber into his Beverly Hills home,” said the insider. “He spent about an hour a day in the chamber for a period of weeks. He usually fell asleep, and when he got out, he said he felt like a new man.
“Simon believes that being in the chamber helped suppress the swelling from his surgery as well as bloating from his drinking and years-long smoking habit.”
Since I’ve never treated Simon, I can’t say for sure what he had done. I do commend him for being candid with his Botox use. Overall, he looks like he’s aging very well. But hyperbaric oxygen chamber? There are no studies that prove that hyperbaric oxygen reverses aging.

I swear Christie Brinkley just doesn’t age! She looks almost as young as she did when Billy Joel sang “Uptown Girl” to her. Her skin is flawless, and she has nary a jowl or wrinkle on her. Could she have gotten the help of a plastic surgeon?
I think so. No 58 year old woman should look this good without at least some work! I suspect that she’s had several chemical peels and laser treatments to smooth her skin, Botox injections to relax her forehead, and maybe even an eyelid lift to remove sagging eyelid skin. Has she had a facelift, though? Tough call, but from the looks of it I’d answer ‘probably so.’ Most 58 year old women have at least some drooping skin and early jowling.
Plastic surgery or not, she looks amazing!

From the RealSelf.com blog:
The 16-week study appeared in the Journal of Psychiatric Research earlier this year and reported that the face’s inability to register emotion post-Botox may help those with treatment resistant depression.
Participants in the treatment group were given one dose (five injections) of Botox between and just above the eyebrows, whereas the control group was given placebo injections. Symptoms of depression in the treatment group reportedly decreased 47% after six weeks, and remained at that level through the study period. In comparison, the placebo group had a 9% reduction in symptoms.
M. Axel Wollmer of the University of Basel, who led the study, says that since Botox “interrupts feedback from the facial musculature to the brain, which may be involved in the development and maintenance of negative emotions,” it may be able to regulate depression.
I find this fascinating. What causes the people who received Botox to feel better? Is it interruption of neural feedback like the commentor claims? Or, could it be that preventing a frowning face makes a person feel happier? It’s documented that smiling a lot can improve a person’s mood. Could it be due to something like this?
A final possibility: maybe the cosmetic benefits made the person feel better about himself or herself, alleviating some of the depression symptoms. Although I doubt the latter, it’s interesting to speculate. Botox is definitely turning out to be a true wonder drug!

Congratulations to Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart for getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I’ve been a fan of theirs since high school, and still have some of their songs on my iPhone operating room playlist. Some of my favorites are “Alone” and “These Dreams.” I can’t stand that one song of theirs “All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You.” Yeech!
So what does Nancy Wilson have to do with plastic surgery? Her ’11′ sign! You can see the two vertical lines between her eyebrows resembling an ’11.’ She would be a perfect candidate for Botox to this area. I’d love to do it for her. On the house. If she sang me an acappella version of “These Dreams.”

Nope! No Botox here! Rumors of plastic surgery have surrounded Arnold Schwarzenegger for years, although none of them have been confirmed. Arnold recently commented about it in an interview for USA Today:
Schwarzenegger is definitely not looking tired in the face. Despite the lack of facial lines, the star insisted he’s never had “Botox. Or any surgery.”
“So this is the real thing,” he added, pointing to his face.
It could be because the action star admits to having “a funny bone” that not only keeps him looking young , but also allows him to give his one-liners so convincingly.
Actually, I see quite a few lines on his face! He does look like he has aged quite a bit, especially after the stress of the scandal involving his former maid. Did you know that Arnold is now 65 years old?

The Divine Miss M looks quite tight tonight! The famous 66 year old singer / actress recently ventured out for Paris Fashion Week with a strangely smooth forehead. I suspect that she’s had some Botox injections to create that frozen forehead look. Might she also have had a browlift?
It’s definitely possible. Browlifts typically move the hairline back a centimeter, sometimes two. As you can see in the photo, her hairline looks pretty receded.
I’ve always liked Bette Midler. She has a fabulous voice. Although I like my share of action movies, I admit that I enjoyed Beaches and even For The Boys. But no, I did not cry at either movie!

Here is a segment I did with ABC’s Nightline a few months back, when the term “Bro-Tox” was just getting picked up. It’s a cute little piece. We’re definitely seeing more and more men in my office for Botox. Many male celebs have reportedly admitted to having it done, including Patrick Dempsey and Simon Cowell.
Hope you enjoy the segment!

Is Donatella Versace laying off plastic surgery and tanning? The usually bronzed, smooth-faced fashion icon has exhibited lighter skin and a few wrinkles as of late. She may be an example of what happens when Botox wears off.
If she is truly staying out of the sun, I applaud her. The two worst things you can do to your skin is get too much sun and smoke cigarettes. It’s amazing how these two bad habits combine to age a person.
I won’t even mention her lips…

It looks to me that Catherine Zeta Jones is following in her husband Michael Douglas’s plastic surgery footsteps. She appears to have gotten a nice dose of Botox into her forehead and between her eyebrows, causing them to be extremely smooth. I also suspect maybe a little filler injections in her cheeks? Overall I think she looks pretty good!
I just recommend that she doesn’t overdo things. She’s such a natural beauty!

Is this really Melissa Gilbert? She looks nothing like the young actress from Little House on the Prairie. I suspect that she’s had a little work done. Click HERE to visit RadarOnline.com to read my thoughts.

Barbra Streisand’s face has undergone some changes. While her trademark schnozz is the same, it appears she may have visited a plastic surgeon in the recent past. I suspect that she’s had some Botox injections to smooth her forehead and some filler injections like Restylane to plump her cheeks. I don’t see any signs of invasive surgeries, like a facelift, however.
I don’t blame her for possibly having work done. Don’t we all wish we looked The Way We Were?
