Nosejobs On Greyhounds

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

My Beverly Hills plastic surgery mentor, Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, has written a book called “Nosejobs on Greyhounds.”  I heard about his manuscript while I worked in his office back in 2003, but never had a chance to actually read it.  According to his blog, the book is close to being released.  Here is a tidbit from his most recent blog post concerning his book:

There are so many stories I could tell, and sometimes it’d hard to tell them from my standpoint, without, perhaps, offending someone. I hope I don’t sound flippant with peoples desires and lives, and I don’t mean to sound too casual.

Plastic surgery is serious business, and I take my job very seriously. When I step into the operating room and put on my gown and gloves, all humor stops. “Doctor Ellenbogen with gloves,” I call myself. I become a completely different personality from the one who counsels patients with good humor and understanding.

Finally, I must acknowledge my art teacher at the University of Florida. “I just can’t paint,” I told him, after presenting an unsuccessful canvas.

“Potters are artists. Weavers are artists. Sculptors are artists. Cartoonists are artists. You just need to find your medium,” he told me.

Thanks to all of the above, I guess I found my medium.

I want to read this one.  For those of you who don’t know him or haven’t seen him on Dr. 90210, Nightline, or any of the many television programs he’s graced, Dr. Ellenbogen is a quintessential Beverly Hills plastic surgeon.  He began operating on celebrities back in the 80′s, and continues to have a busy practice today.  He’s also been the mentor for many prominent plastic surgeons.  These surgeons who trained under him practice in Chicago, Arizona, California, and, yes, Michigan.

Dr. Sanjiv Kayastha – Albany Plastic Surgeon

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Since I have readers from every state (and even many other countries), every so often I try to recommend a plastic surgeon from another region whom I can vouch for. For those of you in the Albany, New York area, I give my highest recommendation to Dr. Sanjiv Kayastha. I did most of my residency training with Dr. Kayastha, and if I can describe him in one word it would be integrity. He is a thorough, meticulous, honest, and talented plastic surgeon who performs the entire spectrum of plastic surgery, including hand surgery, cosmetic surgery, and reconstructive surgery. He may not be me (ha ha), but he is a damn fine surgeon.

Visit his website at www.kplasticsurgery.com.

Let him know I sent you!

Dr. Richard Hainer – Rochester, Michigan Plastic Surgeon

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Every so often I post on a plastic surgeon whom I know and can vouch for. In the past, I’ve posted on such surgeons as Dr. Terry Higgins and Dr. Steven Svehlak, both great friends of mine and fantastic plastic surgeons. Dr. Richard Hainer is also a part of that group.

When I arrived back to Michigan from L.A., Dr. Hainer was one of the only plastic surgeons who welcomed me to the area. Even with the competitive cosmetic surgery climate he took it upon himself to offer me whatever assistance he could provide. I have come to know him as a fine surgeon and a good friend. In fact, we often exchange information on the latest techniques in plastic surgery and how we can improve our surgical results. One surgery which he described to me is the Hybrid Breast Lift/Reduction, which combines traditional U.S. techniques with European techniques for a nicer breast shape. I’ve found that this technique has significantly improved my own breast lift results. Unlike myself, he also performs reconstructive breast surgery, labiaplasty, and hand surgery, all with an eye for detail and achieving optimal results. I don’t vouch for a lot of surgeons, but Dr. Hainer is one I do vouch for. His office is located in Rochester Hills, Michigan, just a handful of miles from mine.

Dr. Terry Higgins – Las Vegas Plastic Surgeon

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

A few months ago I wrote a post on one of the plastic surgeons who has served as one of my mentors, Dr. Richard Ellenbogen. Every so often, I’ll post on a plastic surgeon who I know well and can vouch for. Dr. Terry Higgins is one of them.

Dr. Higgins is one half of a prominent plastic surgery practice in Las Vegas. We went to residency together and he is one of my good friends, as well as an outstanding plastic surgeon. Dr. Higgins is probably the most gracious plastic surgeon I’ve ever met. He is one of very few plastic surgeons whom I would consider going into practice with, and I would trust him to operate on me if I needed it. I think this is one of the best compliments a surgeon can give to another surgeon.

Dr. Richard Ellenbogen – Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon

Friday, April 6th, 2007

A few posts ago I stated that I was planning to post on various prominent plastic surgeons whom I know and/or admire.

If there is one plastic surgeon whom I’d consider my mentor, it would have to be Dr. Richard Ellenbogen. He has been a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon for 30 years, and is still going strong. He is a pioneer in facial plastic surgery, including facial fat grafting, the Volumetric Facelift, and rhinoplasty. Dr. Ellenbogen is the only Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who is kind enough to teach other young plastic surgeons the “tricks of the trade” through a post-graduate Aesthetic plastic surgery fellowship. He has over a dozen successful proteges out there, me being one of them.

I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Ellenbogen. During my year out in L.A. he taught me many plastic surgery procedures I had never seen (or even heard of) before. Like Dr. Gary Motykie, I was fortunate enough to be featured on Dr. 90210 with Dr. Ellenbogen. He is definitely a pioneer in our field, and continues to be a quintessential celebrity plastic surgeon.

Michigan Plastic Surgeon / Michigan Plastic Surgery

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Who am I? It came to my attention recently that in the past year that this blog has been around, I’ve never really explained who I am and where I come from.
Here is my educational background:

Greenville Senior High School: 1986-1990 (valedictorian)
Kalamazoo College: 1990-1994 (magna cum laude- B.A.)
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine: 1994-1998 (M.D.)
Michigan State University Grand Rapids General Surgery Residency: 1998-2001
Michigan State University Grand Rapids Plastic Surgery Residency: 2001-2003
Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship w/Dr. Richard Ellenbogen: 2003-2004

I was offered a spot in Dr. Ellenbogen’s practice, a prominent one in Beverly Hills, California, but turned it down. My wife and I moved back home to Michigan, where we settled in Rochester Hills, a suburb of Detroit. I opened my practice, The Hills Plastic Surgery and Laser Centre, in August of 2004. I am thankful for the great success that we’ve had.

My practice currently consists of mainly cosmetic plastic surgery. I do participate with the major insurance companies as a resource for reconstructive patients in need.

I’ve been featured in Dr. 90210. My comments on celebrity plastic surgery have been published in many national magazines, including In Touch Weekly, Life and Style, US Weekly, JANE, The National Enquirer, and OK! Magazine, among others.

Some of the surgeries I specialize in include facial fat grafting, the Volumetric Facelift, Breast Augmentation, Tummy tucks, and VASER Liposelection, to name a few. I’m also an active writer for major plastic surgery journals and am on the Editorial Advisory Board for the prominent magazine, Plastic Surgery Products.

It feels like I’ve gone to school forever. The field of cosmetic plastic surgery is my passion, however, and I am dedicated to practicing my craft with the utmost in integrity and skill.

So that is who I am in a nutshell. In general, I prefer to keep the intimate details of my family life private and off the blog. Over the next several months I will post information on some of the plastic surgeons around the country whom I respect and consider either my mentors or my respected contemporaries.

Now back to the celebrities!
